About Watchtower Publications

The printed page had been one of the most effective tools for the Watchtower Society. Their two semi-monthly magazines, The Watchtower and Awake! had publication figures for each issue in January, 1996 of 18,950,000 and 15,730,000, respectively. That adds up to over 832 million magazines a year! The Watchtower magazine is the "theological" publication of the Society. The publication of one or more new books each year, with first editions of three to five million copies, has a real impact. The Watchtower Society is the largest private publishing company in the world. Only the government of the former Soviet Union, which was the only publisher in that country, was larger. The Watchtower publishes more than all other religions combined!

The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures was completed in portions from 1950 to 1960, with the complete Bible revised and issued in 1961. Their Bible has been revised several times since then, in 1970, 1971, 1981, and 1984. Many Biblical scholars have examined this "translation" and have found it to contain many errors and have found the Watchtower's own doctrines introduced into the text of this Bible. The Watchtower also has two Greek interlinear New Testament texts. The older work is The Emphatic Diaglott, translated by Benjamin Wilson, a Christadelphian. The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures, published in 1969 and revised in 1985, combines the Westcott and Hort Greek text with the Society's own interlinear translation and the latest revised text of The New World Translation. Both works clearly reveal a doctrinal bias. A topically arranged Bible-verse handbook (with verses frequently out of context), Reasoning from the Scriptures, was published in 1985 and revised in 1989. This book gives the Witness preprogrammed Watchtower answers for nearly any question he may be asked at the door. A Bible encyclopedia, Aid to Bible Understanding, which reflects the Witnesses' understanding on many topics, was completed in 1971. Due to doctrinal changes and the disfellowshipping of some of the writers, a revised encyclopedia, Insight on the Scriptures, was printed in 1988. A Jehovah's Witness can now "study" the Bible and never leave Watchtower Society publications. In fact, most Bible "studies" with the Witnesses are really only a study of a Watchtower book, with the Bible used as a reference, looking up most verses out of context.
